LIAM O'CONNOR & SEAN McKEON:
DUBLIN MADE ME

Liam O'Connor: fiddle, viola
Sean McKeon: uilleann pipes
Ciaran Mordaunt: percussion

It may be just mere coincidence that, almost exactly 30 years ago, a remarkable fiddle and pipes duet album entitled "Doublin'" was released by two formidable young Dublin musicians named Paddy Glackin and Paddy Keenan. Very much like them, the two young musicians heard on this exceptional new CD were both raised in Dublin, and are heirs of a great musical legacy, one resulting from the confluence of family traditions and influences from the vital Dublin music scene. Liam O’Connor (fiddle, viola) is the son of Mick O’Connor, a famed flute player who was a member of the Castle Ceili Band, and Sean McKeon (uilleann pipes) is the son of well-known piper Gay McKeon, and brother of Conor McKeon, also a piper, with whom he recorded the excellent album “The Dusty Miller” a year ago or so. Both young players show themselves to be worthy of this legacy, and then some. Liam O’Connor is a remarkably agile player who seems to take after Sean Keane in his effort to make the fiddle sound somewhat like a set of pipes, while Sean McKeon, who appears to have studied the "Dead Sea scrolls" of Irish piping, specifically the Irish-American piping style from the early 1900s, is positively “channeling” the great Patsy Touhey. Not only are the two players gifted with impressive technical skills, but they sound like they were intent on going all out rather than play it safe. The result is music which, warts and all (not that there are too many), sounds fresh, genuine, heartfelt, spontaneous, and in the end profoundly human, qualities which, in our age of sophisticated studio electronics, too often disappear under the weight of misdirected production. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the "Doublin'" of our time, and more. What an amazing album!

‘Casadh na Taoide’ is a truly outstanding recording from Líadan, a group who have firmly established themselves on this their 2nd album as a genuine force to be reckoned with.
Well chosen and well crafted sets of tunes perfectly showcase Líadan’s instrumental supremacy culminating in a sound that is both refreshingly new yet at the same time respectful
of the tradition in which these six girls are so obviously steeped in. Rarely have I heard such exquisite and heartfelt vocal gems as those found on ‘Casadh na Taoide’.
Individually they deliver standout vocal performances that are further enriched by their beautifully ethereal and almost sibling sounding harmonies reminiscent of an early Clannad or
Skara Brae. Enough said, buy it and delight in it as much as I have.’

The 69 Traditional Irish Tunes on this double CD are arranged in sets with introductions by Seamus Creagh.
Each tune is played twice, the first time it is played plainly and the second time ornamentation is added.

The tunes are played slowly but not too slowly and they never loose Seamus’ wonderful lift.

It is unique in that it is a purely auditory tutorial of a compilation of sets with introductions naming the tunes, which are
played by a renowned fiddle player at a learnable and listenable pace.

This CD demonstrates that the oral tradition of passing on tunes is ongoing in Irish Traditional Music. The generous passing on of the tradition is still very much alive and it is not and was not just the passing of tunes from father to son but from musician to anyone who truly wants to learn.

“This unique CD by the well-know traditional fiddler, Seamus Creagh, will prove a real boon for anyone trying to increase his or her repertoire of real Irish Tunes” Tomás Ó Cannain.

FOINN SEISIUN - SESSION TUNE SETS, VOLS. 1, 2, 3

This series of books and CD sets was produced to provide those learning to play Irish music with a virtual session to play along with, at home or wherever they may be practicing, and to hone their skills. The tunes, comprising sessions standards in all the main genres (even mazurkas and waltzes), are grouped in medleys of two or three, and are performed that way on the companion 2-CD sets. The musical notation is the typical single-line, bare-bones version. The recorded performances, by musicians playing accordion, banjo, concertina, fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes, etc, in various combinations, are not necessarily most sophisticated musically, but they have plenty of energy and are well suited to their intended use.

Book 1 and CD 1: 116 tunes
Book 2 and CD 2: 104 tunes
Book 3 and CD 3: 108 tunes

When people talk of Roscommon, images of rolling hills, fertile farmland and shimmering lakes are conjured up. But when people hear the music of Roscommon the imagery is much more vivid and powerful.
The Roscommon flute tradition has arguably one of the richest regional styles in Irish music.

We have here, in a recording of immense value and importance, further proof that the flute playing tradition of Roscommon is strong and unbroken, healthy and very much alive.

This project was co-ordinated by Noirin Ni Riain and features chant recorded in the church at Glencairn by Leon O'Neill. The theme of the selected chant is in Praise of Mary from which the title of the cd is taken. We tried to work only to facilitate the talent within the community and all the vocals, sleeve notes and artwork was done by the nuns.
In Praise of Mary marks the anniversary of seventy-five years of Cistercian life in Glencairn. Our singing of the Divine Office seven times a day in choir in our Abbey Church has been sustained through the generations by women who have given their lives to God, striving to worship "with one heart, joining constantly in prayer." (Acts 1:14) The hymns and chants in this collection of recordings are taken from our daily praise in the liturgy of the hours and of the eucharist.

‘The Leitrim Equation’, is a combination of new tunes by local musicians, Lúnasa playing Leitrim tunes and traditional tunes played by Leitrim musicians accompanied by the various members of Lúnasa.

Others featuring on the CD include Charlie, Ben and Maurice Lennon, Eleanor Shanley, Michael McNamara, Dave Sheridan, Mary McPartlan and more.

The newly composed tunes element came out of a regular ‘new tunes’ workshop with Lúnasa members Kevin Crawford and Paul Meehan with the aim of encouraging a group of local players to explore the world of composition following in the footsteps of established Leitrim composers such as Charlie Lennon, Joe Liddy, Brian Rooney and Maurice Lennon. During these workshops Kevin and Paul worked with a group of six Leitrim musicians, teasing out various snippets, ideas or phrases they might have, shaping them into the outline of a tune. Over the course of these sessions a body of work was created out of which nine tunes were selected and explored in full, at which stage Lúnasa members Seán Smyth, Cillian Vallely and Trevor Hutchinson were brought in to add their touch and sound to these. These wonderful new tunes can be heard on ‘The Leitrim Equation’ CD, played by the composers and members of Lúnasa. The next generation of composers in the Leitrim tradition has emerged and this represents a great investment in the future of traditional music in the county.

Two of the most well-known musicians on the Irish music circuit, flute player Kevin Crawford and uilleann piper Cillian Vallely, announce the release of their exciting new album, ‘On Common Ground’. A couple of years of researching tunes in between a heavy schedule of band commitments has directly led to this recording from Lúnasa’s powerhouse melody makers.

Joining Lúnasa in 1997 and 1999 respectively, Crawford and Vallely have become key components of a group which has become one of the most acclaimed and influential bands in the recent history of Irish music. Having released seven band albums and worked on numerous solo projects, the duo decided to combine their individual talents and create something different. An album with the distinctive sound of “flat-pitched” flute and pipes duets has emerged.

‘Tasty tunes and terrific playing make "On Common Ground" one of the recording triumphs of this still young year. It is a pinnacle performance from Cillian Vallely and Kevin Crawford, two uncommonly gifted Irish traditional musicians.’
Earle Hitchner, The Wall Street Journal and Irish Echo, NY.

The legacy of the Doran brothers is best reflected in the profound influence which their incredible piping has had on subsequent generations of musicians. Piping luminaries such as Davy Spillane, Paddy Keenan and Finbar Furey all cite the Dorans as sources of inspiration and that extraordinary influence remains undiminished today. The ‘travelling’ style of piping often refers directly to the Doran legacy.

Traveller Piper features material filmed at the Doran Centenary Tionól which took place at Spanish Point in April 2008 and includes contributions from Finbar Furey, Paddy Keenan, Mickey Dunne, Mick Coyne, John Rooney and Leo Rickard.

A series of interviews and performances details the lives of these extraordinary musicians and their rich contribution to Irish traditional music.

The Doran brothers were brought up in Rathnew, Co. Wicklow and are direct descendents of the great 19th century travelling Wexford piper John Cash. Johnny died tragically in 1950 aged only 42 but fortunately the Irish Folklore Commission had made recordings of his music in 1947, a year before he was struck down by an accident. These recordings were published by NPU in 1988. Felix Doran spent his early years as a travelling musician, performing extensively all over Ireland before settling down in Manchester in the 1960s. He died in 1972. Recordings of Felix made in the 1960s were published by Topic Records (Felix Doran, The Last of the Travelling Pipers) four years after his death.

In 2007, four young musicians came up with the idea of putting a band together called Mórga (Irish for majestic) inspired by the sound and sheer energy of the of great traditional Irish bands of the seventies. The band is based around accordion, fiddle and banjo as melody instruments, with backing provided by the rarely heard Greek bouzouki, creating rich high-end harmonies, and driven by the bass beat of the bodhran. The aim is to recreate a part of our musical heritage, which is too often lost in contemporary Irish music.
Featuring: Barry Brady (button accordion),Jonas Fromseier (banjo and Greek bouzouki),Danny Diamond (fiddle),Dominic Keogh (bodhran).

An excellent album with excellent musicians.
