Dillon Cara - Sweet Liberty

Dillon Cara - Sweet Liberty

Artikelcode: 1714

Cara Dillon, Sweet Liberty
The praise heaped upon Cara Dillon's self-titled debut album was at times excessive but it was not without cause.
With arranger/producer Sam Lakeman, the young Irish folk singer found a way to tread lightly along fairly recognisable paths.
Without breaking any moulds, Lakeman and Dillon bridged the pop/folk mainstream and the more traditional fringe with nine traditional numbers and two originals, one of them the beautiful Blue Mountain River.
The convincing argument was Dillon's voice, a light and sweet instrument given to almost instinctive melancholy and capable of suggesting modern without foregoing its roots.
Sweet Liberty takes the bridging work a bit further, expanding the production and structure - there's a little more activity sonically and in instrumentation. While traditionalists may quibble that Dillon is no June Tabor (and really, she doesn't try to be) you could slip this into the CD player of a Robyne Dunn, Sinead O'Connor or Kathryn Williams fan and not have any objections. All of them would see the fragility in her interpretation of Erin the Green where her voice brushes by you and the way, on the self-penned High Tide, she crosses back and forth between folk and pop phrasing.

And none would miss the unadorned poignancy of There were Roses, a poetic and moving tale of modern Ireland written by Tommy Sands and given wide exposure by Billy Connolly in his recent travel documentary through Ireland. Though Dillon doesn't give the song the full tragic load, she engages you in such a way that you find your own way to the song's heart.
Another original, Where Are You has a timeless prettiness about it that recalls Kate Bush in her less dramatic mode. And here you see the hidden strength of Dillon's gossamer voice that doesn't try to fight against the rising tide of guitars and uillean pipes but rides it and lets it carry her to the song's close.
There's more than charm here; there's also firmness and elegance.
